How to use BT139 Triac

This article outlines a basic solid-state relay project that can be used to replace electromagnetic relays. The circuit can readily drive a 1000 watt AC load. You can use a higher value triac, such as BTA41 or similar, to drive more load. Any traic you use will require a proper heat sink.

There are several advantages to employing a solid-state relay over an electromagnetic relay. A few of the most important advantages are dependability, quick switching speed, output current control, noise reduction, low current drive (minimum 5mA), and low voltage drive (as low as 3.6V DC).

Only a BT139 triac, a MOC3021 optocoupler, and a few additional discrete components are used in the circuit. The input can come from any device, such as microcontrollers, CMOS ICs,  Arduino , and so on.
