Overview of FT232RLv

The FT232R is a USB to serial UART interface device which simplifies USB to serial designs and reduces external component count by fully integrating an external EEPROM, USB termination resistors, and an integrated clock circuit that requires no external crystal, into the device. It has been designed to operate efficiently with a USB host controller by using as little as possible of the total USB bandwidth available.

FT232RL USB Bus Powered Configuration

USB bus-powered device gets its power from the USB bus. Basic rules for USB bus power devices are as follows.

i) When connected to a USB port, the gadget should drain no more than 100mA.

ii) The device should not draw more than 2.5mA when in USB Suspend mode.

iii) A bus-powered high-power USB device (one that draws more than 100mA) should use one of the CBUS pins designated as PWREN# to keep the current below 100mA when plugged in and 2.5mA when in USB suspend mode.

iv) A USB bus-powered hub cannot accept a device that uses more than 100mA.

v) No device on the USB bus can draw more than 500mA.

FT232RL Self Powered Configuration

A USB self-powered device gets its power from its own power supply, VCC, and does not draw current from the USB bus. The basic rules for USB self-powered devices are as follows.

i) When the USB host or hub controller is powered down, a self-powered device shall not drive the current down the USB bus.

ii) Because it has its own power supply, a self-powered device can utilize as much current as it needs during regular operation and USB suspension.

iii) Any USB host, bus-powered USB hub, or self-powered USB hub can be utilized with a self-powered device.

 

USB to RS232 Converter

The TTL levels of the FT232R are converted to RS232 levels using a TTL to RS232 Level Converter IC on the serial UART interface of the FT232R in this application. The popular "213" series of TTL to RS232 level converters can be used to perform this level shift. In a 28-LD SSOP package, these "213" devices typically have four transmitters and five receivers, as well as an in-built voltage converter that converts the +5V (nominal) VCC to the +/- 9 volts required by RS232. The SHDN# pin, which may be utilized to power down the device to a low quiescent current during USB suspend mode, is a helpful feature of these devices.
