L297 Description

The L297 Stepper Motor Controller IC generates four phase drive signals for two-phase bipolar and four-phase unipolar step motors in microcomputer-controlled applications. The motor can be driven in half step, normal and wave drive modes and on-chip PWM chopper circuits permit switch-mode control of the current in the windings. A feature of this device is that it requires only clock, direction and mode input signals. Since the phase is generated internally the burden on the microprocessor, and the programmer is greatly reduced. Mounted in DIP20 and SO20 packages, the L297 can be used with monolithic bridge drives such as the L298N or L293E, or with discrete transistors and Darlington.

L297 and L298 Circuit

A two-phase bipolar stepper motor drive circuit can be built using L297 and L298. It's powered by a constant current mode, and each phase's peak current can reach 2A. The L297 is a stepper motor controller that produces two-phase bipolar voltage. Set the drive signal (A, B, C, D) and the motor current. The stepper motor's power output is driven by the L298. A double full bridge mode is used to power it. The motor coil is fully utilized due to the bipolar drive, allowing the motor to attain the best drive.

A stepping motor subdivision driving circuit is constructed when two pieces of L297 are used to drive the two windings of a stepping motor through L298, and the Vref corresponding to each winding is adjusted through two D/A converters.

The schematic below depicts the L297+L298 drive wiring theory. The appropriate control terminals of L297 are linked to ports P0 and P4. The goal of commanding the motor to rotate in the predicted direction is therefore accomplished thanks to the software's rational organization.

In addition, terminal 1 of L297 is the synchronous terminal, which can be connected to terminal 1 of another group of L297 and L298 drive circuits. In this way, the two sets of drivers can be synchronized to achieve the effect of driving multiple motors at the same time.
