L7812CV Description

The L7812CV can provide local on-card regulation, eliminating the distribution problems associated with single point regulation. The L7812CV embeds internal current limiting, thermal shut-down and safe area protection, making it essentially indestructible. If adequate heat sinking is provided, it can deliver over 1 A output current. Although designed primarily as a fixed voltage regulator, the L7812CV can be used with external components to obtain adjustable voltage and currents.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.What is L7812CV?
The L7812CV is a three-terminal positive voltage regulator. This regulator can provide local on-card regulation, eliminating the distribution problems associated with single point regulation. It employs internal current limiting, thermal shut-down and safe area protection, making it essentially indestructible.
2.What is the difference between fixed voltage regulator and adjustable regulator?
Adjustable Voltage regulators require a very few external components to achieve its operation. Fixed voltage regulators require almost no external components (may be a couple of bypass capacitors). At low cost you have a wide range of voltage and current selection.
3.Will a L78S12CV be cooler than a L7812CV when handling the same load?
The performance characteristics, such as Output voltage vs. junction temperature, is identical for both. The operating (junction) temperature is different, 7812 is 0-125°C; 78S12 is 0-150°C. In both cases, in a TO-220 package, the thermal resistance is the same: 5°C/W for junction-case, and 50°C/W for junction-ambient. Based on this information, I would not expect the 78S12 to run cooler given the same load and heatsink. But it can handle higher operating temperatures, which may be a reason to favor it.
4.How to wire the L7812CV regulator IC?
If it is packaged as TO-220, the identification method is to face the side with the words to yourself, and the pins downwards. Count 123 from left to right. Pin 1 is input, pin 2 is ground, and pin 3 is output. 78 Series of voltage regulator chips must be DC input, if the input and output are reversed, the chip will be burnt. In addition, the input DC voltage should not be too high.
