LM117H Description

The LM117 series are exceptionally easy to use and require only two external resistors to set the output voltage. Further, both line and load regulation are better than standard fixed regulators. Also, the LM117 is packaged in standard transistor packages which are easily mounted and handled.

In addition to higher performance than fixed regulators, the LM117 series offers full overload protection available only in IC's. Included on the chip are the current limit, thermal overload protection, and safe area protection. All overload protection circuitry remains fully functional even if the adjustment terminal is disconnected.

Normally, no capacitors are needed unless the device is situated more than 6 inches from the input filter capacitors in which case an input bypass is needed. An optional output capacitor can be added to improve transient response. The adjustment terminal can be bypassed to achieve very high ripple rejection ratios which are difficult to achieve with standard 3-terminal regulators.

Besides replacing fixed regulators, the LM117 is useful in a wide variety of other applications. Since the regulator is “floating" and sees only the input-to-output differential voltage, supplies of several hundred volts can be regulated as long as the maximum input to output differential is not exceeded, i.e., avoid short-circuiting the output.

Also, it makes an especially simple adjustable switching regulator, a programmable output regulator, or by connecting a fixed resistor between the adjustment pin and output, the LM117 can be used as a precision current regulator. Supplies with electronic shutdown can be achieved by clamping the adjustment terminal to ground which programs the output to 1.2V where most loads draw little current.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.What is the name of lm117 and its role?
LM117 is a three-terminal adjustable voltage regulator. LM is a device series, which represents a linear monolithic circuit. 117 is the serial number of the device, representing grade, and its operating temperature range is from -55 degrees to +150 degrees.
2.What is the difference among LM117, LM217 and LM317?
Different working temperature: The working temperature of LM117 is from -55℃ to 150℃, LM217 is from -25℃ to 150℃, and LM317 is from 0℃ to 125℃. Other parameters of them are the same.
3.How to use LM117 to make a constant current source?
We know that the structure of 117 and 317 is basically the same. The difference is that one of them is a positive power supply and the other is a negative power supply. When their common terminal is grounded (117 should be connected to the positive terminal), their output is positive and negative 2.5V, and the output is enough to terminate a resistor, but the power must be satisfied, and the output current size is obtained by dividing 2.5V and the size of the resistor.
4. What package forms does LM117 includes?
Four package forms: TO-220, TO-220FP, D²PAK, TO-3.
5.What are the consequences if the input voltage of LM117-5 is less than 6.2V?
At least there are no dangerous consequences, and the direct consequence is that the voltage is not regulated. For example, if the input is 5.5v or 4.5v, the output will be lower than this, such as 4.7V or 3.7V, the load will be lower.
