LM35 Description

LM35 is a precision centigrade temperature sensors, It shows values in the form of output voltages instead of degree Celsius.  LM35 shows high voltage values than thermocouples and may not need that the output voltage is amplified.

The output voltage of LM35 is proportional to the Celsius temperature. The scale factor is .01 V/°C. One most important characteristic is that it draws just 60 microamps from its supply and acquires a low self-heating capacity.

LM35 temperature sensor available in many different packages like T0-46 metal transistor-like package, TO-92 plastic transistor-like package, 8-lead surface mount SO-8 small outline package.

LM35 Functional Block Diagram

How to use LM35?

LM35 is a precession Integrated circuit Temperature sensor, whose output voltage varies, based on the temperature around it. It is a small and cheap IC which can be used to measure temperature anywhere between -55°C to 150°C. It can easily be interfaced with any Microcontroller that has ADC function or any development platform like Arduino.

Power the IC by applying a regulated voltage like +5V (VS) to the input pin and connected the ground pin to the ground of the circuit. Now, you can measure the temperate in form of voltage as shown below.

If the temperature is 0°C, then the output voltage will also be 0V. There will be rise of 0.01V (10mV) for every degree Celsius rise in temperature.  The voltage can converted into temperature using the below formulae.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.What’s the working principle of LM35?
LM35 is a widely used temperature sensor. Because it uses internal compensation, the output can start from 0°C. Its basic working principle: The temperature sensor circuit converts the measured temperature signal into a voltage signal and outputs it to the signal amplifying circuit. The voltage signal corresponding to the temperature value is amplified and then output to the A/D conversion circuit to convert the voltage signal into a digital signal. For the SCM system, the SCM system processes the digital quantity according to the display needs, and then sends the temperature display system to display.
2.Can LM35 temperature sensor replace DS18B20 temperature sensor?
The two cannot be directly substituted, because the working process and output of the two are different. LM35 is a direct output linear analog quantity, which can be adjusted by the circuit to become the required voltage or current analog quantity for subsequent applications. If it is to be used on a single-chip microcomputer, it can be used after analog conversion; DS18B20 outputs a digital quantity, which can be directly connected with The single-chip microcomputer performs digital processing. The working voltage of LM35 is larger and wider, while DS18B20 works intelligently under the voltage of 2.5V~5V of single-chip microcomputer.
3.How to convert LM35 output signal to binary?
The output of LM35 is an analog voltage signal, which needs an A/D converter to convert it into a binary digital signal.
