MOC3021M Description

The MOC3021M is a 6 pin DIP through-hole random phase triac driver output optocoupler. A  GaAs  infrared emitting diode and a light-activated silicon bilateral switch that operates like a triac are used in this device. This device is used to connect electronic controllers to power triacs in order to control resistive and inductive loads in 115 VAC applications. Industrial controls, solenoid/valve control, traffic lights, static AC power switch, vending machinesincandescent bulb dimmers, solid-state relays, and lamp ballasts are examples of common applications.

The "hot" side of the line is switched in this circuit, while the load is attached to the cold or ground side.

The triac is snubbed with a 39 ohm resistor and a 0.01 μF capacitor, while the coupler is snubbed with a 470 ohm resistor and a 0.05μF capacitor. Depending on the situation and load, these components may or may not be required.
