Overview of NRF9160

The nRF9160 DK is a low-cost, pre-certified single-board development kit for the nRF9160 System-in-Package (SiP) for LTE-M and NB-IoT applications. It also comes with an nRF52840 board controller, which can be used to build a Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE) gateway, for example. It has a dedicated LTE-M and NB-IoT antenna that can operate globally and supports a wide range of bands. The certification coverage of the nRF9160 DK is the same as that of the nRF9160 SiP.

To support both plug-in and soldered (e)SIMs, the nRF9160 DK features a nano/4FF SIM card slot as well as an MFF2 SIM footprint. It comes with an iBasis sim card with global coverage and 10 MB of data preloaded.

NRF9160 Interface

The modem firmware includes the physical layer, LTE stack layers L1-L3, IPv4/IPv6, TCP/UDP, and TLS/DTLS. The application processor interfaces with the LTE modem via BSD secure sockets APIs, and it houses the application layer protocol, such as CoAPMQTTHTTP(S), or LWM2M, as well as the user application.

The nRF9160 LTE modem accepts both SIM and eSIM cards, and can be soldered or plugged in. It charges the SIM card and conducts all communication on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is nRF9160?
The nRF9160 is a small, highly integrated System-in-Package (SiP) that makes the newest low-power LTE technology, as well as advanced processing and security, available and easy to use for a wide range of low-power cellular IoT (IoT) single-device designs.
How do I program nRF9160?
Open nRF Connect for Desktop and launch nRF Connect Programmer. Make sure that the PROG/DEBUG SW10 switch (SW5 for v0. ... Connect the nRF9160 DK to the computer with a micro-USB cable, and turn it on. ... Click Select device and select the device from the drop-down list.
What is nRF Connect SDK?
nRF Connect SDK is a scalable and unified software development kit for building products based on all our nRF52, nRF53, and nRF91 Series wireless devices.
What is the difference between NB-IoT and LTE-M?
NB-IoT is compatible with both 2G (GSM) and 4G (LTE) networks, whereas LTE-M is only compatible with 4G. LTE-M, on the other hand, is backward compatible with existing LTE networks, but NB-IoT employs DSSS modulation, which necessitates special hardware. Both are expected to be available on 5G networks.
What’s the frequency of nRF9160?
700MHz~2.2GHz.
