The PIC12F683  is a mid-range PIC12  family  8-bit strong (200-millisecond instruction execution) yet easy-to-program (just 35 single word instructions) CMOS flash-based Microcontroller that incorporates a powerful PIC®(RISC) architecture. This product combines the benefits of the well-known mid-range x14 architecture with standardized features such as 3.5kB of addressable program memory, 128bytes of data memory, 6 general-purpose I/O pins, one comparator, and a 4-channel 10-bit analogue-to-digital (A/D) converter. This device has a maximum frequency of 20MHz and an operating voltage range of 2 to 5.5V.

PIC12F683 Timer

PIC12F683 contains three timers, two of which are 8-bit and one of which is 16-bit. All of these timers function in both directions, i.e. as a timer and a counter. Timer mode is used to delay the execution of relevant functions while also increasing the instruction cycle. While the counter mode counts the number of intervals in the designated functions and increases the pin's rising and falling edges.

There are some more timers that are independent of the above timers and work in the same way to generate a delay in the controller's running function. Among these timers are

  • Oscillator Start-up Timer

  • Power-up Timer

The former is used to produce a delay in oscillator mode until the crystal oscillator becomes stable, while the latter is used to create a 72ms delay once the device is turned on. This will allow adequate time for the power source to stabilize and send power signals at regular intervals.
