Automotive Relays

Automotive relays are automatic switching devices designed for use in cars. They utilize solid-state technology for contactless switching control, ensuring reliable performance. These relays function as electrically operated switches, managing the current flow to various components and systems within the vehicle. Specifically engineered for automotive applications, automotive relay typically operates at 12 volts (12V) or 24 volts (24V) in direct current (DC) systems. Widely employed in automotive lighting, wiper, starting, and other critical systems, relays play a pivotal role in automotive electronic control systems, serving as essential components for efficient and safe vehicle operation. Our automotive relay types include PCB plate relays, quick connection relays, receptacle mount relays and more.

What are the types of automotive relays?

There are many types and specifications of automotive relays, classified by working principle and structure, common types include electromagnetic relays, solid-state relays, temperature relays and reed relays.

According to the current level classification, the common type is 40A automotive relay, suitable for motors, high-power lamps and other high-power equipment; 30A automotive relay, using medium power equipment such as fans and air conditioning systems; 20A automotive relays for smaller power equipment such as in-car lighting, sound systems, and PCB-mounted relays for currents of 10A and below.

How do automotive relays work?

Automotive relay is an electronic control device, its working principle is to control the operation of large current through small current, to play the role of automatic regulation, safety protection, conversion circuit, switch and so on. If the car relay fails, some functions of the vehicle cannot be used normally.

How to test automotive relays with multimeter?

To test automotive relays with a multimeter, start by setting the multimeter to the resistance or continuity mode. Remove the relay from the vehicle and identify the relay's control and power terminals. Connect the multimeter probes to these terminals and check for continuity or resistance. A working relay should show low resistance or continuity between the control and power terminals when activated. If there is no continuity or high resistance, the relay may be faulty and in need of replacement.
