Contactors (Solid State)

The solid state contactor is an electrical switching element used to replace the traditional mechanical relay. Its working principle is to control the current on and off through a semiconductor device (such as a thyristor), so as to realize the switching control of the circuit. Compared with traditional mechanical relays, solid state contactors have higher switching speeds, lower noise and longer life, allowing for more accurate and reliable circuit control.

Solid State Contactor-SSC applications in motor

  • Household motor control: power tools, fans, water pumps.
  • Click control in industrial production lines.

Because solid state contactors have the advantages of high speed, low noise, long life, etc., they can play their unique advantages in some special occasions. For example, in the case of high frequency and high speed motor control, solid state contactors can be used instead of mechanical relays to achieve higher control accuracy and more reliable circuit control. In these applications, solid state contactors can replace traditional mechanical relays as circuit switching elements to enable motor start, stop and speed regulation.

What is contactor?

A contactor, also known as an electrical contactor, is an electrical component used to switch on or off an AC or DC main circuit or a large-capacity control circuit with a load. Its main control object is the electric motor, transformer and other power load, can achieve remote connection or disconnection circuit, frequent operation, reliable work.

The working principle of contactor is: when the coil is energized, the static iron core generates electromagnetic suction, so that the moving iron core is drawn, and then drive the three moving contact pieces of the contact system to act, the main contact is closed, the auxiliary normally closed contact is disconnected, the auxiliary normally open contact is closed, and the power is switched on. When the coil is powered off, the electromagnetic suction of the static iron core disappears, the reaction force of the spring separates the moving iron core from the static iron core, and the three moving contact pieces of the contact system act to disconnect the primary contact, close the auxiliary normally closed contact, disconnect the auxiliary normally open contact, and cut off the power supply.

Types of electrical contactors

1.  Definite Purpose Contactors: Designed for specific applications, such as motor control or lighting control.

2.  Reversing Contactors: Used to reverse the direction of rotation of a motor by switching the polarity of the power supply.

3.  Magnetic Contactors: Utilize a magnetic coil to control the opening and closing of contacts.

4.  Miniature Contactors: Compact in size and suitable for applications with limited space.

5.  Contactor Relays: Combines the functions of a contactor and a relay for control applications.

6.  HVAC systems: Contactors play a crucial role in HVAC systems. They are widely used in a variety of critical equipment in control systems, such as compressors, fans and heating elements. The contactor controls the start and stop of the electric equipment through the excitation of the electromagnetic coil, and realizes the adjustment and control function of the system. For example, contactors can start and stop compressors to control cooling or heating cycles, regulate the operation of fans to keep air flowing, and control heating elements to maintain room temperatures. In addition, the contactor also bears the responsibility of system protection, when there is overload or short circuit in the system, the contactor can quickly cut off the power to prevent equipment damage or safety accidents. By integrating with the controller or automation system, the contactor can also achieve intelligent control and remote monitoring functions, improving the efficiency and convenience of the system. Taken together, contactors are an indispensable and critical component in HVAC systems, ensuring stable and efficient system operation.

Solid State Contactor vs contactor

Solid state contactor uses semiconductor switching elements for circuit control without mechanical contacts,  while a traditional contactor uses electromechanical contacts for circuit switching. The main difference between solid state Contactor and Contactor is their working principle and construction. In principle, solid state Contactor uses solid-state semiconductor devices (such as thyristors or bidirectional thyristors) for current control, with no mechanical parts, and switches the circuit electronically. contactor uses electromagnets to control the contact and separation of mechanical contacts, and switches the circuit mechanically. Structurally, solid state Contactor is usually compact and contains semiconductor switching elements and control circuits, with no mechanical moving parts. The contactor is usually composed of an electromagnetic coil, a mechanical contact, and a housing. The mechanical contact is opened and closed by the action of the electromagnetic coil.
