GaN transistors have a high breakdown tolerance, enhanced thermal conductivity, faster-switching speeds, and lower on-resistance.

Traditionally, the most common material used in semiconductor production has been Silicon (Si) due to its abundance and affordability. However, semiconductor manufacturers can use many other materials. Plus, most of them afford additional benefits, such as Silicon Carbide (SiC), Gallium Arsenide (GaAs), and Gallium Nitride (GaN). Out of these potential materials, GaN or Gallium Nitride is becoming widely recognized and preferred. That is because GaN transistors have several advantages over their material counterparts.

GaN transistors, or even GaN on SiC transistors, have a high breakdown tolerance, enhanced thermal conductivity, faster-switching speeds, and lower on-resistance. This makes them better all-around than silicon-based devices. These properties enable a host of benefits, which make the material and technology enticing for modern applications.

What Are GaN Transistors?

Gallium Nitride can significantly enhance the properties and design of semiconductors. It has high electron mobility, which means it can support higher gain at higher frequencies and with higher efficiency, compared to other materials. What’s more, its high activation energy offers exceptional thermal properties, as well as a higher breakdown voltage. Transistors must be able to withstand a multitude of heat, energy, and environmental conditions. When they fail it can bring down the entire system.

These benefits make for a much better semiconductor and a device that offers a welcome boon to reliability and efficiency. Some real-world examples may help show its true promise. Because GaN transistors can withstand a greater range of temperatures, and reliably, they are useful in rugged and all-weather technologies. The telecommunications field also uses them in amplifiers. Why? They allow for a wider signal bandwidth, creating stronger and more capable communication devices. These amplifiers also use less energy, which reduces operating costs without compromising efficiency.

Empowering the Internet of Things

IoT semiconductors have unique requirements that traditional devices do not. They must be able to utilize low-power — and perform efficiently under these conditions — come with built-in security measures, and in a much smaller form factor. To make matters worse, the IoT and IIoT, have grown popular, and for good reason. Now, semiconductors and related devices are high in demand. Yet, there aren’t many materials or technologies that can accommodate these limitations.

GaN transistors absolutely can. And while the materials may be more expensive up front, the payoff is worth it thanks to the benefits gained.

So, what are the high-level benefits of GaN transistors?

Smaller Form Factor(s)

GaN transistors have a higher power density, higher thermal conductivity, and higher breakdown voltage than comparable devices. Most importantly, they have much lower power requirements, so you get way more with a lot less. That enables the design and manufacturing of smaller form factor devices, to both fit in smaller, thinner technologies also without compromising power, reliability, or security.

It’s a huge boon considering many of our flagship technologies in today’s landscape are being slimmed down as much as possible.

Lighter Tech

A slim or small form factor doesn’t make it lightweight, especially when you’re packing a lot into a small frame. But because GaN transistors accommodate a much higher switching frequency, the supporting inductors and power capacitors used in the circuit don’t need to be as substantial either. Nevermind the cost benefits of using smaller hardware, it also significantly reduces the weight and volume of the final product.

That gives way to not just slimmer and smaller tech, but also lighter tech, with higher performance and efficiency ratings.

Lower System Costs

While GaN transistors, and Gallium Nitride, generally have a higher cost than other materials and conductor types, many still see lower system costs when implementing these materials. By reducing both the size and costs of other components in the device, and using alternative methods such as passive inductive elements, savings can be realized.

It’s important to point out that many of these alternatives are possible because of the benefits GaN transistors offer, with their higher power density, smaller volume, and additional properties.

Better Products

Without listing all of the beneficial properties of GaN transistors in full, once again, we’ll make the point that they contribute to better semiconductors and devices, period. That, of course, leads to better products, from communication devices supporting wider signal bands, to tech that can withstand extreme temperatures and environments.

Even consumer-grade devices benefit from enhanced reliability and also gain the longevity and performance to excel. It’s no wonder the GaN transistors are the preferred semiconductor for 5G technologies and networks.

Reduced Energy Costs

Because they’re more efficient and more capable, GaN transistors reduce the energy and operating costs of the technologies they’re used in. Less energy is expended when they’re powered for longer periods because they’re good with thermal conductivity — heat. They also produce more power in a smaller overall size, with a much lower propensity for failure.

Enhanced Wireless Power Transfer

A higher switching frequency also enables higher-powered wireless power transfers or electromagnetic power transfers. Devices can be further apart from each other while charging or transmitting, offering better spatial freedom. Also, the transmit signal is stronger and better to receive airgaps.

The resulting technologies benefit merely because of enhanced functionality. Imagine wireless charging support for devices that are faster, more reliable, and practical even at greater distances from a hub or system.

GaN Transistors Have Proven Benefits

At this point, it should be clear that GaN transistors — and the Gallium Nitride material — are more efficient, and reliable, despite being smaller and more lightweight.

With digitization on the rise and the advancement of many technologies at stake, these benefits allow for cutting-edge innovations. Fast switching speeds, a high-power density, better efficiency in a smaller form factor, and incredible reliability, just to name a few.

The most pertinent question for manufacturers and device-makers will be, are the upfront costs worth the investment? If you’re looking to make powerful and more reliable devices, then the answer is an unequivocal yes.
